There's a long history behind this comic. I first sent my artist, Agent Yin, a synopsis for this series late February 2014. There were some bumps and hiccups along the way-- major bumps and hiccups-- but the first issue was fully completed late April 2016.
One year later, we were contacted by an independent publisher who found our comic online and wanted to pay for printing and start hitting comic cons. Our first stop was Philadelphia, and our first day there was one I'll never forget. We were setting up our booth and had the chance to actually hold our comic in our hands for the very first time.
The delicate thickness of the pages. The lush richness of the black inks. And best of all? The theretofore unimaginable glory of seeing our names printed smack dab at the top.
For anyone involved in the arts, there is no greater feeling than that of a finished work.
The Spade outsold all the other comics that were featured in the booth. When we did another comic con in Chicago, The Spade outsold once more. Things were going as good as they could for an indie comic with no real marketing behind it...
...but then the publisher disappeared off the face of the earth. Without a word, without a trace, his email was deactivated and my texts went unanswered. And what sucked the most was that he had just finished printing the second issue-- which fired on all cylinders in terms of art and story.
The indescribable joy I had when I held Issue One for the first time, would be a joy unfelt for Issue Two.
It would take some serious money and planning to publish The Spade series on my own-- a task I'm not ready for quite just yet. I've shopped it around to other publishing companies, but no one's taken a bite. In the meantime, I've got a graphic novel in the works to hold you guys over. I'll get back to The Spade one day. As to when that day will be, I haven't the slightest idea. But, in the meantime, here are Issues One and Two for your reading pleasure.
It was a heckuva journey getting The Spade here. Hope you enjoy.
